The Scottish Stonemasons’ Marks Project records the marks on mediaeval and later buildings across Scotland. These marks are the only surviving record of who created most of our older buildings.
We engage with local heritage organisations and communities to help them identify and record marks which are added to the national heritage record.
For buildings open to the public, this is a valuable additional tool to encourage engagement with our built heritage by allowing a “hands-on “ contact with the building and contributes to understanding of its origins. For buildings in private ownership, it adds useful data to the historical record.
We can also offer activity sheets for young people, focussed on P6/7 age group.
